In a unanimous statement, the 15 members of the Council also require the South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and his rival, Vice-President Riek Machar, to "do their utmost to control their forces and immediately end the fighting".

The Council calls upon "countries of the region", without specifying which, the Council for Peace and Security of the African Union and regional organizations of East Africa (IGAD) to "discuss firmly with south Sudanese leaders to address this crisis."

They "consider strengthening UNMISS (the UN mission in South Sudan, ed) (..), so that it can better prevent and respond to violence" and ask them "to prepare to provide additional troops should the Council decide that."

The statement did not specify which countries would be solicited nor the extent of the proposed reinforcement.

It asked countries in the region to "help" but it will still define how, said Japanese Ambassador Koro Bessho who chairs the Council in July.
