The future trade agreement between the European Union (EU) and Morocco must be in line with international law and the decision of the European Union’s Court of Justice (CJEU), Said Wednesday the ambassador of Algeria in Belgium, Amar Belani.

The EU Council of Ministers adopted last Monday a recommendation from the European Commission authorizing the European Commission to open negotiations between the EU and Morocco on the adaptation of certain protocols to the agreement between the EU and Morocco, as well as draft directives for negotiating an agreement between the EU and Morocco, the source recalled.

In an article published in “Afrique Asie”, the Algerian ambassador stressed that the agreement reached by the European Commission “is not about specific amendments but about a negotiating mandate, which should respect certain parameters recalled in a press release published on 29 May by the Swedish Government, such as the conformity of the additional agreement with international law, including the provisions contained in the decision of the Court of Justice of the EU on the approval of the Saharawi people.

He said it was not a “blank check” given to the negotiators of the European Commission, “whose action would have to satisfy the requirements of transparency”, stressing that the position of the Member States on the Final agreement “will depend on the conformity of its content with the expectations and principles promoted by these countries”.
