Ahmed Nait Hocine, the Director of the National Center for Road Safety and Prevention (CNPSR), announced, on Monday in Algiers, that the biometric driving license will be issued by the end of 2017, when biometric driving license “with points” is due to enter in force in the first half of 2018.
Speaking at the El Moudjahid forum, Mr Nait Hocine said that “the operation of surrendering citizens of the biometric driving license is scheduled to end at the end of 2017, pending its generalization at the national level”, specifying that the old driving license remains valid, in addition to the use of the national driving license file, being drawn up at the level of the Ministry of the Interior, local authorities and regional planning.
“The entry into force of the point license is expected in the first half of 2018,” he said, adding that it required a period of up to five years before the total cancellation of the old license.
The Director of CNPSR also referred to the record of road accidents recorded, during the first eight months of the current year, which declined by 14.81%, with 17,333 accidents causing 2,517 deaths and 25,426 injuries , as against 2,817 deaths and 31,365 injured in 20,346 road accidents, recorded during the same period of 2016 “.
Mr. Nait Hocine said the number of deaths would not exceed this year, the threshold of 3,000 deaths, a figure that is “far” from the average recorded in recent years, estimated at more than 4,000 deaths / year, thanks to “procedures rigorous legal provisions contained in the new legislation, as well as the awareness campaigns launched by CNPSR in coordination with the various institutions and enterprises.
He recalled that the material damage caused each year by road accidents, at the national level, exceeds 100 billion dinars “,” approximate figure “advanced in 2016 by the Transport Laboratory of the University of Batna province.
