ALGIERS- Several operations were carried out, in the past week (December 21-27, 2022), by detachments and units of the People’s National Army, as part of their noble missions to defend and secure the national territory against all forms of threats, demonstrating the unwavering and unfailing commitment of the Armed Forces to maintain peace and security in the country, said the Ministry of National Defense in a statement.

“As part of the fight against terrorism, combined detachments of the ANP “arrested five (5) elements supporting terrorist groups in separate operations carried out across the national territory, while a homemade bomb was discovered and destroyed in Tébessa by another detachment of the ANP”.

“As part of the fight against organized crime and in continuity with the sustained efforts aimed at countering the scourge of drug trafficking in our country, combined detachments of the ANP arrested, in coordination with the various security services during operations carried out through the Military Regions, 33 drug traffickers and foiled attempts to introduce huge quantities of drugs from the borders with Morocco, amounting to 5 quintals and 31 kilograms of treated Hashish, while 342 grams of cocaine and 162,972 psychotropic tablets were also seized”, noted the same source.

In addition, in Tamanrasset, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, In Guezzam, Djanet and Tindouf, ANP detachments “intercepted 324 individuals and seized 15 vehicles, 143 generators, 64 jackhammers, 9 metal detectors, as well as detonation tools and equipment used in illicit gold panning operations”, underlined the press release which reported the arrest, during separate operations across the national territory, of 5 other individuals and the seizure of 4 automatic pistols, a Kalashnikov-type submachine gun, a loaded magazine, 6 hunting rifles, quantities of foodstuffs intended for smuggling and speculation amounting to 23 tons, as well as 205,000 packets of tobacco and 3,080 units of various drinks.

Similarly, the Border Guards “thwarted, in coordination with the services of the National Gendarmerie, attempts to smuggle large quantities of fuel amounting to 28,112 liters in Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Tébessa, Souk Ahras and El-Tarf “, according to the communiqué, adding that the Coast Guard “thwarted, at the level of our national coasts, attempts of illegal emigration and rescued 259 individuals aboard craft-made boats, while 90 illegal immigrants of different nationalities were arrested across the national territory”.
